In 1785, Elizabeth, an enslaved woman in New York, was sent to Charleston to be sold, leaving behind her young child. Robert Townsend — son of her enslavers and a former spy for George Washington — found her, safeguarded her child, and brought her back. Their story, set against the Revolutionary era, features figures like Franklin, Hamilton, and Adams, and shows how Townsend became a committed abolitionist.
